  • Casper’s Mattress Topper (Queen, $295) is a three-inch, three-foam topper that can make your mattress softer and comfier.
  • I slept on it for three weeks to see how it stacks up.
  • The good: It’s soft, cushiony, and dense enough to stand the test of time. If you like Casper products, you’ll probably like this. It also comes with a 100-night sleep trial, free shipping and returns, and a 10-year limited warranty.
  • The less good: It didn’t make me sleep hot, but it didn’t seem to regulate my temperature, either.

Casper, the internet’s friendly bed-in-a-box giant, recently added CBD-infused sleep gummies and, more quietly, a Mattress Topper to its sleep lineup.

The Mattress Topper comes in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and Cal King and ranges in price from $195 for the Twin to $355 for the California King (a Queen size will cost you $295). It’s a three-inch, three-foam topper. According to the company, all of the foams are hypoallergenic and Certi-PUR certified. They also have tiny holes that function like pores, helping hot air escape.

Like much of what Casper offers, the Topper comes with a 10-year limited warranty, a 100-night trial period, and free shipping and returns.

In terms of price, it’s not really a budget option or a super luxury option compared to what else is out there. Amazon’s Choice of the LinenSpa 2-Inch Gel Infused Memory Foam Topper is $57 for a Queen, and the cult-favorite Tempur-Topper Supreme is $400 for a Queen-size typically.

To see what it’s like in person, Casper sent a Mattress Topper to Insider Picks to test. I took it home and slept on it for three weeks.

You can find my full Casper Mattress Topper review below, but here’s the gist:

Casper’s topper is a comfortable and plush option that will soften firm mattresses or provide additional cushion, and you’ll probably like it if you’re already a fan of Casper products.

But, Casper’s foam held onto more heat than my previous mattress topper, though I wouldn’t go so far as to say it sleeps hot. The latter con shouldn’t pose much of an issue for rooms with an AC running or during the winter, but it may not be the best option for the money if you or your partner sleep hot. If that describes you, browse the best cooling mattress toppers you can buy here.

Unpacking and setting up the Mattress Topper

The Casper Mattress Topper arrives in a compact box at your doorstep. It’s not lightweight, but it wasn’t so heavy that I couldn’t carry it up to a third-floor walk-up by myself. I opened the box, unwrapped the topper, and rolled it out on top of my bed. Since it is heavy, I’d recommend lining it up with your bed so the long end opens to match the long end of your bed, so you don’t need to readjust.

You can use it immediately after opening since it balloons to its typical size after the wrapping is removed, but I let it air out throughout the day (a habit with foams that can smell slightly like chemicals upon arrival, though this one wasn’t very noticeable).

The top covering is soft, and the three inches of foam bode well for cushioning and the odds that it won’t flatten over time like cheaper, thinner options. The Casper Topper doesn’t have straps to stick under your mattress or box spring to keep it in place, but it’s heavy enough to not really require them – after weeks of sleeping on top of it, the Casper Topper hasn’t really shifted in placement.

How the Mattress Topper feels

In terms of feel, the Mattress Topper is soft, plush, and overall provides solid cushioning – especially when on your side. If your mattress isn’t already extremely soft, this will likely make it softer.

Some important things to note are that the top cover does not appear to be machine-washable. And while not unpleasant – especially in a room with an AC going – the Casper Mattress Topper did sleep hotter than my typical mattress topper. That could be because my original topper is made from foam infused with copper (copper is a thermal conductor used to keep you cooler) and is two inches thick. In comparison, Casper is said to use graphite to absorb body heat in the middle layer and is three inches. However, it wasn’t such a difference that the average person would notice in a cool room. It just didn’t seem to help regulate my temperature.

Other options to consider

If you sleep hot, foams may not be the best option for you. Instead, you may want to consider feather or wool options that naturally regulate heat – keeping you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter – though at the expense of support and probably your budget. Or, check out microfiber-filled toppers like Parachute’s Down Alternative Topper (Queen, $229) that deliver on softness and loft and will stay fluffy for longer than feather toppers. The bottom line

If you’re looking for a way to soften your mattress up, this is a good option. It’s not the most expensive or the least expensive option, and it should last you a while thanks to the three inches of foam and a 10-year limited warranty. Check out the fine print on the warranty, and know that you’re getting Casper’s 100-night sleep trial with free shipping and returns. If you don’t love it, let them know to pick it up and start issuing a refund. However, if you need something that will cool you down as you sleep, this is probably not the right option for you.
